Discorso del Santo Padre ai pellegrini convenuti a roma per le beatificazione e ai membri della "Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Petri" in occasione del X anniversario dell' Ecclesia Dei

Je vous salue cordialement, chers pèlerinsqui avez tenu à venir à Rome à l'occasion du dixièmeanniversaire du motu proprio Ecclesia Dei, pour affermir et renouvelervotre foi au Christ, et votre fidélité à l'Église.Chers amis, votre présence auprès du "Successeur de Pierreà qui revient en premier de veiller à l'unité de l'Église"(Conc. œcum. Vat. I, Constitution dogmatique I Pastor æternus)est particulièrement significative.

Pour sauvegarder le trésor que Jésuslui a confié et en étant résolument tournéevers l'avenir, l'Église a le devoir de réfléchir enpermanence sur son lien avec la Tradition qui nous vient du Seigneur parles Apôtres, telle qu'elle s'est constituée tout au long del'histoire. Selon l'esprit de conversion de la lettre apostolique Tertiomillennio adveniente (nn. 14, 32, 34, 50), j'exhorte tous les catholiquesà faire des gestes d'unité et à renouveler leur adhésionà l'Église, pour que la légitime diversitéet les différentes sensibilités, dignes de respect, ne lesséparent pas les uns des autres, mais les poussent à annoncerensemble l'Évangile; ainsi, stimulés par l'Esprit qui faitconcourir tous les charismes à l'unité, tous pourront glorifierle Seigneur et le salut sera proclamé à toutes les nations.

Je souhaite que tous les membres de l'Églisedemeurent les héritiers de la foi reçue des Apôtres,dignement et fidèlement célébrée dans les saintsmystères, avec ferveur et beauté, afin de recevoir de manièrecroissante la grâce (cf. Conc. œcum. de Trente, session VII, 3 mars1547, Décret sur les sacrements) et de vivre une relation intimeprofonde avec la divine Trinité. Tout en confirmant le bien fondéde la réforme liturgique voulue par le Concile Vatican II et miseen œuvre par le Pape Paul VI, l'Église donne aussi un signe de compréhensionaux personnes "attachées à certaines formes liturgiques etdisciplinaires antérieures" (motu proprio Ecclesia Dei, n.5). C'est dans cette perspective que l'on doit lire et appliquer le Motuproprio Ecclesia Dei; je souhaite que tout soit vécu dans l'espritdu Concile Vatican II, dans la pleine harmonie avec la Tradition, visantl'unité dans la charité et la fidélité àla Vérité.

C'est sous "l'action de l'Esprit Saint, par laquellele troupeau du Christ tout entier se maintient et progresse dans l'unitéde la foi" (Conc. œcum. Vat. II, Constitution dogmatique Lumen gentium,n. 25), que le Successeur de Pierre et les évêques, successeursdes Apôtres, enseignent le mystère chrétien; de manièretoute particulière, les évêques, réunis en Concilesœcuméniques cum Petro et sub Petro, confirment etaffermissent la doctrine de l'Église, héritière fidèlede la Tradition existant déjà depuis près de vingtsiècles comme réalité vivante qui progresse, donnantun élan nouveau à l'ensemble de la communauté ecclésiale.Les derniers Conciles œcuméniques - Trente, Vatican I, Vatican II- se sont particulièrement attachés à éclairerle mystère de la foi et ont entrepris des réformes nécessairespour le bien de l'Église, dans le souci de la continuitéavec la Tradition apostolique, déjà recueillie par saintHippolyte

Il revient donc en premier lieu aux évêques,en communion avec le Successeur de Pierre, d'exercer avec fermetéet charité la conduite du troupeau, pour que la foi catholique soitpartout sauvegardée (cf. Paul VI, Exhortation apostolique Quinqueiam anni; Code de Droit canonique, can. 386) et dignement célébrée.En effet, selon les formules de saint Ignace d'Antioche, "là oùest l'évêque, là aussi est l'Église" (Lettreaux Smyrniotes, VIII, 2). J'invite aussi fraternellement les évêquesà avoir une compréhension et une attention pastorale renouveléeaux fidèles attachés à l'ancien rite et, au seuildu troisième millénaire, à aider tous les catholiquesà vivre la célébration des saints mystèresavec une dévotion qui soit un véritable aliment pour leurvie spirituelle et qui soit source de paix

En vous confiant à l'intercession de laVierge Marie, parfait modèle de la sequela Christi et Mèrede l'Église, chers Frères et Sœurs, je vous accorde la Bénédictionapostolique, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui vous sont chers

I cordially greet you, dear pilgrims who madea point of coming to Rome on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of theMotu Proprio Ecclesia Dei, to confirm and renew your faith in Christ, andyour faithfulness to the Church. Dear friends, your presence with the "Successorof Peter to whom it concerns in the first place to take care of the unityof the Church" (First Vatican Council, First Dogmatic Constitution Pastoraeternus) is particularly significant.

To safeguard the treasure that Jesus entrustedto her while remaining resolutely turned towards the future, the Churchhas the duty to reflect continually on her ties with the Tradition whichcomes to us from the Lord through the Apostles, as it has been constitutedthroughout history. In accordance with the spirit of conversion of theApostolic Letter Tertio millennio adveniente (nn. 14, 32, 34, 50), I exhortall Catholics to make gestures of unity and to renew their adhesion tothe Church, so that legitimate diversity and various sensitivities, worthyof respect, do not separate them from each other, but lead them to proclaimthe Gospel together; thus, stimulated by the Spirit which causes all charismsto concur in unity, all will be able to glorify the Lord and salvationwill be proclaimed to all the nations.

I wish for all members of the Church to remainheirs of the faith received from the Apostles, celebrated with dignityand fidelity in the sacred mysteries with fervour and beauty, in orderto receive grace in an increasing way (cf Concil Trent, Session VII, March3, 1547, Decree on the sacraments) and to live in a profound and intimaterelation with the Divine Trinity. While confirming the well foundedliturgical reform desired by the Second Vatican Council and put in motionby Pope Paul VI, the Church also gives a sign of understanding to persons"attached to certain prior liturgical and disciplinary forms" (Motu ProprioEcclesia Dei, N 5). It is in this perspective that one must read andapply the Motu Proprio Ecclesia Dei; I wish for all to live in the spiritof the Second Vatican Council, in the full harmony with the Tradition,aiming at the unity in charity and fidelity to the Truth.

It is under "the action of the Holy Spirit, bywhich the whole flock of Christ is sustained and progresses in the unityof faith" (Vatican II, Dogmatic Constitution Lumen gentium, N 25), thatthe Successor of Peter and the bishops, successors of the Apostles, teachthe Christian mystery; in a very particular way, the bishops, brought togetherin Ecumenical Councils "cum Petro and sub Petro," confirm and strengthenthe doctrine of the Church, faithful heiress of the Tradition which hasalready existed for nearly twenty centuries as a living reality which progresses,giving a new force to the whole of the community of the church. The lastecumenical Councils - Trent, Vatican I, Vatican II - attempted particularlyto clarify the mystery of the faith and undertook reforms necessary forthe good of the Church, with a view to continuity with the Apostolic Traditionwhich was already collected under Saint Hippolytus.

It is thus given primarily to the bishops, in communion with the Successor of Peter, to exert firmness andcharity in the guidance of the flock, so that the Catholic faith is everywhereprotected (cf Paul VI, Apostolic Exhortation Quinque iam anni; Code ofCanon Law, Can. 386) and celebrated with dignity. Indeed, according toformula of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, "Where the bishop is, there too isthe Church" (Letter To the Smyrnians, VIII, 2). I also fraternally invite the bishops to show understanding and renewedpastoral attention to the faithful attached to the old rite and, at thethreshold of the third millenium, to help all Catholics to live the celebrationof the sacred mysteries with a devotion which will be real food for theirspiritual life and a source of peace.

Entrusting you to the intercession of the VirginMary, perfect model of the "sequela Christi" and Mother of the Church,dear brothers and sisters, I grant the Apostolic Blessing to you, as wellas to all those dear to you.
